Rana Begum

Born in 1977 in Bangladesh, Rana Begum relocated to the UK as a child. Graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, she then completed an MFA in Painting at Slade School of Fine Art. 

Begum uses her understanding of formal visual language to create powerful minimalist abstract works. Inspired by Islamic art, architecture, geometric patterns and urban landscapes, Begum's practice explores the interaction between form, light, and color. Simultaneously experimental in aesthetic and precise in technique, her practice challenges accepted notions of materiality and spatial conduct. Folded metal works are first developed as delicate paper studies. Despite the robust material of the final artwork, Begum is able to convey the weightlessness and levity of the original construction.

Light plays an integral role in Begum's artistic process. Multiple perspectives are achieved through the acute composition of light, reflection and form; works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for audiences that is both temporal and sensorial. These geometric planes are exquisitely captivating, inviting the viewer to observe the work from various angles. The physicality of this visual encounter demonstrates Begum's unique ability to blend sculpture, painting and architecture.

Begum's first museum solo exhibition Space Colour Lightopened at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in May 2017 and traveled to Djanogly Gallery in Nottingham, UK in July 2018.
