It was her 2022 installation, Dappled Light, that instantly drew me to Rana Begum’s universe. Beneath a domed mosaic window in London’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, colourful swathes of mesh fabric appeared to float, almost canopial in style, in a way that was both abstract and ethereal. Elsewhere, layers of multi-coloured mesh were draped across the multi-storey spaces of the manor, giving it a whimsical rainbow makeover.
The colourful nets were also reminiscent of her 2020 collaboration with Serbian fashion designer Roksada Ilinčić. Inspired by fishermen in Bangladesh, the rainbow-hued nets were draped above Durbar Court – the location of Ilinčić’s runway presentation.
Born in Bangladesh and raised in the UK, the Begum’s visual language is permeated with colour, geometric grids and repeated forms, and she has been tapped by luxury fashion and jewellery brands for striking scene-setting collaborations. With numerous high-profile commissions under her belt, the year has been a productive one for Begum, with her first US museum survey at SCAD Museum of Art, current commissions at Kew Wakehurst and Oulu26 and an upcoming permanent installation at the Ismaili Center in Houston. Now, she is in Dubai, inaugurating her fifth solo exhibition, Taking Form, at The Third Line, on view until 10 November.
