ON AUTOMOBILES Sophia Al-Maria talks to Omar Kholeif
Ibraaz Talks is a series of specially curated conversations with artists, curators and writers at Art Dubai. Each participant was invited to respond to a particular issue or keyword that they felt in some way addressed formal and conceptual issues affecting contemporary visual culture. In this interview, artist, writer and filmmaker, Sophia Al-Maria, paints a gripping picture of automobile culture in the Arabian Gulf and beyond. Here, Al-Maria touches upon Bedouin life, the loss and rebirth of a mobile society, cultural appropriation, boredom and wildness. She discusses the glorification of the vehicle as an extension of desire, its use as a social emblem and considers the influence of modern and contemporary American culture on the way we live today.
